Music Treatment

Music Treatments are music sessions that include playing, listening, singing, and utilizing various hand instruments to engage in music and develop cognitive, social, various verbal and nonverbal skills, and for rehabilitation. These services are offered virtually or in person. This service has been shown to help many different people for a variety of reasons. Some of the benefits are listed below. Here is an article explaining these benefits.
Benefits of music treatments include:
- reduces anxiety and physical effects of stress
- It improves healing
- It can help manage Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease
- reduces depression and other symptoms in the elderly
- it helps to reduce symptoms of psychological disorders including schizophrenia
- improves self-expression and communication
Some of the activities could include:
- Sing-a-long or Play-along with or without an instrument (percussive or ukulele)
- Blackout song-writing: in which the client is provided with the lyrics to 4 – 5 different choices of songs which represent recovery – such as overcoming barriers, support, or struggles. Then, clients are encouraged to take some time to read the lyrics of the song they choose, and to select words from the lyrics to make up their own song, and then sing it.
- Blues Songwriting: I explain the background of the blues, so that the client understands the basics – i.e. having a line A, repeating line A and a subsequent line B. Then the client shares something that they may be feeling ‘blue’ about, and we think of a solution to the problem or a coping mechanism. Then, brainstorm ideas as to how to make the statements sound poetic in song-writing. Can improvise using the keyboard on an iPad on Garage Band or other musical instrument.
- Song writing and singing to overcome obstacles, limitations or to learn a new verbal or social cue.
